Is life imitating art, or is life imitating art? When it comes to the movies this year that are based on true stories, we are just going to go with the first option, so don’t think too hard about that old question right now.
Naturally, there are a lot of movies that are based on or inspired by real-life events. Take a look at every biopic, film based on a nonfiction book or article, and film directed by a person who was inspired by their own life. The list is endless. Movies based on historical figures, outrageous news stories, real-life crimes, the lives of famous writers and musicians, and more are on the schedule this year.
Emily Bront, the author of Wuthering Heights, film and stage composer Leonard Bernstein, and 18th-century French conductor Joseph Bologne are the subjects of some of the biopics coming out this year. There are also films about subjects that seem more unlikely, like the man who says he invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and the bear that ate a lot of cocaine in the 1980s. Flamin’ Hot and Cocaine Bear are, of course, the titles of those films.)
Check out the list below if you want to prepare your must-watch list for 2023 and like movies that will immediately send you to Wikipedia for more information after you finish watching them.
(Also, if you are behind on your 2022 movies, check out the list of movies based on true stories from last year. They included movies about Weird Al, women warriors in Africa in the 19th century, the #MeToo movement, and Elvis Presley (yes, that one is Elvis.)
Emily Emily is a biopic about Emily Bront, who wrote Wuthering Heights in 1847 and was the sister of Anne and Charlotte Bront. She died when she was only 30 years old. The film is part fiction and focuses on Emily’s writing, her relationship with her sisters, and a love story between Emily (Emma Mackey) and William Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).

Cocaine Bear No, it is not an error. Movies based on true events include a film about a bear who kills a lot of people after taking a lot of cocaine. The only difference is that Elizabeth Banks’ film exaggerates what happened: In 1985, a bear found a bag of cocaine and ate a lot of it, but the bear unfortunately overdosed and died. The absurdity of the comedy-thriller movie is much higher.
The Boston Strangler is a good choice for fans of true crime. Keira Knightley plays reporter Loretta McLaughlin, who broke the story about the so-called Boston Strangler, a man who killed 13 women in the 1960s in Boston. Jean Cole, a fellow reporter, plays Carrie Coon.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, longtime friends and collaborators, team up once more for the film Air, which Ben also directs. The story of the movie is about Sonny Vaccaro, a Nike executive who signed Michael Jordan to a sneaker deal with the company and launched the Jordan sneakers line, which has become extremely popular. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it is interesting to note that, despite the fact that the real-life couple Viola Davis and Julius Tennon will play Michael’s parents in the movie, the legendary basketball player will not appear on screen.

Chevalier’s connections to the French upper class and royalty, including Marie Antoinette, played by Lucy Boynton, as well as the racism he faced are depicted in the film.
Flamin’ Hot If you’re wondering whether or not this movie is about Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, the answer is yes. In this film, Richard Montaez (Jesse Garcia), a Frito-Lay janitor who asserts he invented the spicy snack, makes Eva Longoria’s feature film directorial debut.
Oppenheimer Christopher Nolan’s most recent film, Oppenheimer, is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who created the atomic bomb during World War II. The title role is played by Cillian Murphy, with Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh as costars.
Maestro Bradley Cooper returns to direct a music-based film after directing A Star Is Born. Maestro, which is about composer Leonard Bernstein, is directed by Bradley and stars him. Carey Mulligan, who plays his wife Felicia Montealegre, will play the role of her husband in the movie.
